They were a revolution in musical conception: in them Vivaldi represented flowing creeks, singing birds (of different species, each specifically characterized), barking dogs, buzzing mosquitoes, crying shepherds, storms, drunken dancers, silent nights, hunting parties from both the hunters' and the prey's point of view, frozen landscapes, ice-skating children, and warming winter fires. The inspiration for the concertos was probably the countryside around Mantua. Though three of the concerti are wholly original, the first, "Spring", borrows motifs from a Sinfonia in the first act of Vivaldi's contemporaneous opera Il Giustino. There's also a bonus track from Astor Piazzolla, displaying all of his most distinctive hallmarks.Īs with its predecessor, this album displays musicianship of the highest order and is a fitting farewell to a great player.During this period Vivaldi wrote the Four Seasons, four violin concertos that give musical expression to the seasons of the year. Alongside this appear works that Lloyd Webber has himself arranged, the cellos taking the place of other instruments in Vivaldi's repertoire. The Concerto in G minor was Vivaldi's only original concerto for two cellos. Here they continue to demonstrate their musical as well as personal chemistry with works by Vivaldi.
The Lloyd Webbers' last album release together was the highly successful A Tale of Two Cellos, which was both critically acclaimed and commercially a hit. This album came in at No.20 in Classic FM's Album of the Year 2014. This latest recording from Julian and Jiaxin Lloyd Webber will have added poignancy for his fans around the world as the cellist has now been forced to withdraw from performing because of an injury.
